The specific impact of tea bag material on taste
Feb 24, 2025
Different tea bag materials will have different degrees of influence on the taste of tea, as follows:
Paper tea bags
- Advantages: High-quality paper tea bags usually have good air permeability, which allows tea leaves to fully contact with water during brewing, so that the flavor substances and nutrients in the tea leaves can be released into the tea soup more smoothly, thereby better restoring the taste of the tea leaves themselves.
- Disadvantages: If the quality of the paper tea bag is not good, during the brewing process, the paper may absorb some of the aroma and flavor substances released by the tea leaves, resulting in the aroma of the tea soup not being strong enough, and the richness and fullness of the taste will also be affected to a certain extent. Moreover, some low-quality paper may have its own "paper taste" that blends into the tea soup, destroying the original pure taste of the tea leaves.
Non-woven tea bags
- Advantages: Tea bags made of non-woven fabrics are generally tougher and not easy to break. They can ensure that the tea leaves are completely wrapped during the brewing process, preventing too much tea leaves from mixing into the tea soup, making the tea soup relatively clear and pure in taste, and will not produce an overly bitter or rough taste due to too much tea leaves.
- Disadvantages: The pores of some non-woven tea bags are relatively small, which may limit the full contact between tea leaves and water to a certain extent, resulting in a relatively slow release of flavor substances in tea leaves, making the taste of tea soup not strong enough in the early stage, and the brewing time needs to be appropriately extended to achieve the ideal concentration.
Nylon or silk tea bags
- Advantages: Nylon or silk tea bags have high transparency, relatively loose texture, and good air permeability. This allows the tea leaves to fully stretch during brewing, with a large contact area with water, and the aroma and flavor substances in the tea leaves can be quickly and fully released into the tea soup, allowing the tea soup to achieve a strong taste in a short time, and the aroma is also more uplifting.
- Disadvantages: If the quality of the material itself is not up to standard, it may have some odor, affecting the pure taste of the tea soup. Moreover, this type of material is relatively thin, and may be damaged in the case of multiple brewing or high water temperature, causing the tea leaves to leak out and affecting the drinking experience.
Plastic tea bags
- Advantages: Some plastic tea bags (such as biodegradable plastic tea bags containing polylactic acid (PLA)) have a certain degree of flexibility and stability, and can better maintain their shape, so that the tea leaves have a relatively stable space to stretch and release substances during brewing, which helps to make the taste of the tea soup uniform.
- Disadvantages: When brewing at high temperatures, some plastic tea bags may release plastic particles or produce some odors, which will have a negative impact on the taste of the tea soup, making the tea soup have an unnatural taste and reducing the pleasure of drinking.
